(CARIFESTA Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) Several
advance contingents from countries including The Bahamas, Barbados, St
Vincent and the Grenadines and Jamaica have already arrived in the
country ahead of the opening of CARIFESTA X on Friday 22. Among those
expected to arrive today are contingents from the Cayman Islands,
Anguilla and Barbados. The Surinamese contingent that is travelling via
ferry is expected by tomorrow afternoon.
Rehearsals
to perfect the various CARIFESTA performances are currently underway at
host venues including the Theatre Guild where plays such as Barbados’s
Odale’s Choice Pluft, a Brazilian play and
Ogun Iyan by Trinidad and Tobago will be put on. Meanwhile over at the
National Stadium where a line up of over 1000 participants are set for
the opening ceremony, grand rehearsals will take place tomorrow evening
under flood lights.
Meanwhile,
youths from across the Caribbean will converge at the Guyana
International Convention Centre, Liliendaal for an edutainment
symposium on August 23. The first session scheduled for 10:30 will
examine edutainment and social issues in the Caribbean. The symposium
will feature four Caribbean countries that will analyse the theme
‘Edutainment’- A concept, A strategy.” It is being put on by the
Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport President’s Youth Award in
collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The
afternoon session will include participants from Guyana, Trinidad and
Tobago, Jamaica, Barbados, Bahamas and St Lucia in a workshop
discussing various aspects of edutainment. The session will conclude at
18:00 hours.
The
CARIFESTA Youth Village will be officially launched on Monday 25 August
at the National Park in Georgetown at 18:00 hours. Sessions will run
until Friday 29 August. It is expected to include components such as
drama, dance and a symposium to be held by the United Nations
Population Fund (UNFPA).
Apart
from hosting the Youth Village, the National Park will also host the
CARIFESTA Book Festival and a Muslim Festival, the latter scheduled for
Sunday 24 August beginning at 16:00 hours. The festival will feature
various aspects of Islamic culture.
