The Richard Stoute Amphitheatre at the National Botanical Gardens was alive with international energy on August 26th as the Caribbean Jazz & World Beat Super Concert, a global celebration of music, brought together regional talent and a captivated audience for one unforgettable night.
Hosted by Chrispen Hackett and Gaynelle Marshall, the concert featured acts from Cuba, Barbados, Grenada, Dominica, St. Lucia, and other Caribbean islands. Patrons arrived early, armed with folding chairs and eager anticipation, ready to soak in the diverse sounds of Caribbean jazz. This genre seamlessly blends regional influences with global rhythms, creating a musical experience that transcends borders.
The highlight of the night came with a dynamic performance by Kassav’, the internationally renowned French-Caribbean band. Their zouk-infused set had the crowd dancing and singing along, showing why they continue to stand as pioneers of Caribbean music.
The event attracted a diverse audience, comprising not only jazz enthusiasts but also people from all walks of life, across various age groups, musical tastes, and backgrounds. For many, the concert was an eye-opening experience, introducing them to the richness of jazz beyond its stereotype as “slow music.” With its Caribbean flair and global influences, the evening proved that jazz is a genre that truly belongs to everyone.
The concert’s cultural significance was further underscored by the presence of the Prime Minister of Barbados, the President of Barbados, and other dignitaries, who joined patrons in celebrating the spirit of CARIFESTA XV.
From soulful saxophone solos to powerful vocal performances and infectious rhythms, the Super Concert served as a powerful showcase of the versatility of Caribbean music. It reaffirmed the festival’s role as a platform for cultural connection and pride, as well as a celebration of the rich musical heritage of the Caribbean.
